Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani and Barreira have finalized a new collaboration framework designed to promote training, visibility, and the integration of young creators into the audiovisual industry. The agreement was signed during a meeting held at the educational institution’s facilities.

The signing ceremony was attended by José Luis Moreno, Councilor for Cultural Action, Heritage and Cultural Resources, and President of Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani; Sara Mansanet, Deputy Director of Cinematography and Audiovisuals; Noemí Yim, General Director of Barreira; Laura Pérez, Coordinator of the Master’s Programs in Film; and Mila Luengo, Co-Director of the Master’s in Film and New Media: Screenwriting + Directing.

José Luis Moreno highlighted that “this agreement reinforces Mostra’s commitment to training and emerging talent, building a bridge between academia and the audiovisual industry. We want young creators to find in our festival a space to show their work, learn from professionals, and begin building their future within the sector.”

The core objective of this alliance is to bring the industry’s reality closer to future professionals. To achieve this, the agreement establishes a special session within the upcoming edition of La Mostra—taking place from November 3 to 15—where short films produced by Barreira’s film and animation master’s students will be screened. The exact date for this screening will be announced soon.

In addition to providing an exhibition showcase at the festival, the agreement guarantees professional accreditations for the participating students. This will grant them direct access to official screenings, panel discussions, and exclusive industry areas, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the dynamics of an international festival and connect with industry professionals.

Núria Tamarit will design the poster for the 41st edition of the Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani, which will be held from November 3 to 15, 2026. The Valencian illustrator was chosen through a call for proposals that received 43 submissions.

The Councillor for Cultural Action, Heritage and Cultural Resources and President of the Palau de la Música, José Luis Moreno, highlighted that “this year illustration has been chosen for the development of the image for the new edition of Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani, and moreover, with an illustrator like Núria Tamarit, a creator with a renowned professional career in both the public and private sectors.” The Councillor also emphasized “the exceptionally high level of the submitted proposals, which confirms the excellence of Valencian design today.”

The call for projects for the 41st Mostra de València was supported by ADCV, APIV, and ComunitAD, who also participated in the selection of the winning proposal. Individuals or agencies interested in participating were required to submit a portfolio of previous work, as well as a curriculum vitae or summary of their professional experience. The scope of the commission extends beyond simply creating a poster; it encompasses artistic consulting for an institutional campaign, including a guidelines guide for the catalog and ongoing technical coordination.

Núria Tamarit expressed her satisfaction at being selected to design the graphic identity for the 41st edition of the Mostra de València, stating, “I am very grateful to the jury and the Mostra team for valuing my work and entrusting me with the poster design. It is a challenge for me, both because of the festival’s importance and the affection we have for the city. I am very excited, and we will work to create an attractive and distinctive image that will draw everyone’s attention to the Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani.”

Professional Background

Núria Tamarit is an illustrator and comic book author based in Valencia. She works for both national and international clients across various media, including books, graphic campaigns, and the publishing sector.

Eclectic influences and interests have helped her create a rich graphic universe of evocative textures and vibrant colors. Fantastical elements, voluptuous plant forms, dreamlike creatures, and her signature powerful female characters are prominent features. Among her recent books are *El Enebro* (The Juniper Tree), *Giganta* (Giant Woman), and *Loba Boreal* (Northern Wolf).

Tamarit divides her time between comic and illustration commissions, teaching, self-publishing, and ecofeminist activism.

València Film Afers is the co-production forum of the Mostra de València, fostering alliances among members of the audiovisual industry in Mediterranean countries. It positions València as a hub and platform to support high-quality projects and diverse, auteur-driven cinema specific to the countries of the Mediterranean basin.

This year, the event expands the professional presence with the first edition of València Film Afers: Meet the Composer, in collaboration with the SGAE Foundation. In this way, Mostra de València is pioneering the incorporation of film music as a fundamental part of a co-production forum. Through this new line of work, the festival fosters encounters between composers and filmmakers from Mediterranean countries, promoting new opportunities for artistic and professional collaboration.

Among other requirements, applicants must upload a playlist with the various tracks numbered and labeled on the registration form, with each track a maximum size of 2 MB. A maximum of 10 tracks is recommended. They must also include biographies, an explanation of the submitted playlist, and the option to attach a link to a sequence from a film project.

Awards with economic endowment

The Golden and Silver Palm Trees of the Official Section maintain their endowment of 30,000 and 20,000 euros for production respectively, as well as the amount of €15,000, destined for the distribution in Spain of the Golden Palm Tree.

The winning medium-length film of La Cabina will receive €5,000, and another €5,000 will be added for distribution in Spain. Ciutat de València Audience Award for Xaloc competition has an endowment of € 10,000 for the distribution in Spain of the winning film.

Eligibility Requirements

Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani maintains its commitment of being a meeting point and a model for cinematography in Mediterranean geographical and cultural area. Feature films (more than 60 minutes) and medium-length films (between 30 and 59 minutes) may participate.

Films participating in the Official Section and in La Cabina must have been produced from January 1st, 2025 and may not have been premiered in theatres, on television or on platforms accessible from Spanish territory, nor have been previously screened at other festivals or events in Spain, both in competition or out of competition.

The Centro de Estudios Superiores Barreira Arte + Diseño, the only non-Italian branch of the prestigious Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, has been the setting for an unusual number of presentations and meetings between producers from different parts of the Mediterranean and others from different European latitudes during the second edition of the València Film Afers co-production forum. This year, the international presence has been maintained and the interest of Valencian producers in attending has grown.

Five creative documentaries and five fiction projects from countries in the Mediterranean basin such as France, Spain, Morocco, Lebanon, Croatia, Portugal and Turkey were chosen so that their producers and directors could participate in different pitching sessions and one-to-one meetings with internationally renowned professionals.

Among them was the Valencian production ‘Calle de Los Ángeles’, an autofiction documentary that deals with the gentrification of the Cabanyal neighbourhood, directed and produced by Silvia Rey Canudo, who has noted that the problem of access to housing is of interest to Mediterranean producers, but is surprised by the interest that her project has aroused in countries like Belgium: “The dream of having a house near the beach in a city like Valencia is even greater in Northern countries”. Among these international scouts were the Belgian Andre Logie -producer, among other films, of ‘Little Lies of No Importance’ (2010) and ‘The Death of Stalin’ (2017)-, the German Flora Rumpler -producer of ‘Quo vais, Aida? ‘(2020) or the Swiss -‘The Swallows of Kabul’ (2019).

Another of the projects selected “made in” València is ‘Donant la nota’, a comedy in Valencian produced by Gaia Audiovisuals, which is Abdelatif Hwidar’s first feature film, in which a star with the profile of Ricky Martin or David Bisbal meets a supposed secret son. Its screenwriter, Paco Enlaluna, is satisfied: “There are countries with which it is difficult to establish a co-production because we have to shoot everything indoors, but we have seen many possibilities in others, for example with France”.

Among the repeaters, Portuguese producer Paulo Carneiro, who, thanks to the forum, sees it easier to close a co-production with Spain for his project ‘Penitentes’, directed by Diogo Pereira, a documentary about mountaineers fighting against climate change. For his part, Turkey’s Suraj Sharma, leaves smiling with the ten bilateral meetings he has had to seek co-production for ‘Right Where I Left You’: “We have made many contacts that can help us in the future”. This is what most of the attendees agree on, that it will be much easier to think of international travelling companions once they have shared a couple of intense days in Valencia.

On the other side, on the buyers’ side, Nuria Landete of Sideral Cinema (production company, distributor and sales agent in Madrid) told Mostra de València: “The VFA has not only chosen the projects very well, but also the scouts, because, as well as being very well organised, they have established enough networking activities to generate enough trust in the group to allow us to consider working together without knowing each other beforehand”. She says he has entered into talks with two projects, one national and one international, but does not say if it is one of the others: ‘¿Es usted secuestrable?’, the first feature film by Charli Bujosa from Mallorca; ‘Flying Elephants’, directed by Mona Khaouli and produced by Easy Riders Films (France) and Madame Le Tapis (Lebanon); ‘Grand Petit Frère/Little Big Brother’, the first feature film by Moroccan Karima Guennouni, produced by Janaprod; ‘Beirut, journal d’un effondrement’, directed by French-Lebanese filmmaker Katia Jarjoura and produced by Les Films de l’Après-Midi (France); ‘Jusqu’à l’aube/Until Dawn’, produced by Ouarzazate Films, the new project by Mohamed Zineddaine, award-winning director of ‘La Guérisseuse’ and based on a novel by Mohamed Zefzaf; or ‘Viktorija’, directed by Luka Galešić and produced by Cobra Chicks (Croatia), an acid comedy that narrates the liberation of a mature, bitter, virgin woman who is reborn to life after admitting her sick mother to a nursing home.

The 38th Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani is organised by the València City Council with the collaboration of the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC), the Palau de la Música, Barreira Arte + Diseño and À Punt Mèdia as the official media.

València Film Afers, the International Co-Production Forum of La Mostra de València, announces the projects selected to participate in its second edition, which will take place on 25 and 26 October at the Centro de Estudios Superiores Barreira Arte + Diseño, the only venue outside Italy of the prestigious Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome.

Five creative documentaries and five fiction projects from countries in the Mediterranean basin such as France, Spain, Morocco, Lebanon, Croatia, Portugal and Turkey have been chosen so that their producers and directors can visit Valencia and take part in different pitching sessions and one-to-one meetings with internationally renowned professionals, with the aim of establishing links that will enable them to complete their financing and viability. The selected proposals address genres such as comedy, autofiction, drama and social issues.

‘Flying Elephants’, directed by Mona Khaouli and produced by Easy Riders Films (France) and Madame Le Tapis (Lebanon), is a documentary about the story of an elusive Lebanese musician whose lifestyle is, in itself, a small revolution. ‘Grand Petit Frère/Little Big Brother‘ is the first feature film by Moroccan Karima Guennouni, produced by Janaprod, a road movie in which a young woman sets out in search of her father with her autistic brother. ‘Right Were I Left You’, directed by the Turkish Ümran Safter and produced by Ekim Medya, tells the heartbreaking journey of a woman who transports the body of her brother, who died by suicide, to her home town to bury him. And ‘Beirut, journal d’un effondrement’, by the French-Lebanese filmmaker Katia Jarjoura and produced by Les Films de l’Après-Midi (France), shows how the explosion in the port of Beirut in 2020 disrupts the lives of a Lebanese family.

Completing the shortlist is ‘Jusqu’à l’aube/Until Dawn’, produced by Ouarzazate Films, the new project by Mohamed Zineddaine, award-winning director of ‘La Guérisseuse’ and based on a novel by Mohamed Zefzaf, the so-called “Moroccan Dostoyevsky”.

‘Penitentes’, directed by Diogo Pereira and produced by Bam Bam Cinema (Portugal) and Invasión Cine (Colombia), a documentary that portrays the collaboration between mountaineering and science through João García’s expeditions to the highest mountains in the world to find crystallised ice. And ‘Viktorija’, directed by Luka Galešić and produced by Cobra Chicks (Croatia), an acid comedy that narrates the liberation of a mature, bitter and virgin woman who is reborn to life after placing her sick mother in a nursing home.

Two projects linked to Valencia have also been selected: ‘Calle de Los Ángeles’, an autofiction documentary that deals with the gentrification of the Cabanyal neighbourhood, directed and produced by Silvia Rey Canudo; and ‘Donant la nota’, a comedy in Valencian produced by Gaia Audiovisuals, which is the first feature film by Abdelatif Hwidar, winner of the Goya in 2008 for his short ‘Salvador (Historia de un milagro cotidiano)’. Two films were the most awarded at the closing gala of the 37th Mostra de València-Cinema del Mediterrani. The French-Iranian ‘Until tomorrow’, by Ali Asgari won three of the main awards of the night (the Golden Palm Tree, Best Director and Best Actress for Sadaf Asgari). The Israeli film ‘Concerned Citizen’, by Idan Haguel, won the Silver Palm Tree, the award for best script and best actor, for Shlomi Bertonov. The best cinematography award went to Paolo Carnera for his work in ‘Nostalgia’, by Mario Martone. The best music went to Amin Bouhafa, composer of ‘Among the Fig Trees’.

The winning film receives a reward of 30,000 euros plus 15,000 for the Spanish distributor. It is a Franco-Iranian co-production focuses on the plight of a young woman living in Tehran. Fereshteh is forced to hide her illegitimate baby for one night from her parents, who come for a surprise visit. Its director, Ali Asgari, was exultant: “I am very happy to obtain all this recognition from Mostra. It is a great honor for me; but, above all, it is very important for the film because it will be distributed in Spain. Specially at these difficult times for Iran where women and many people are protesting and fighting for basic rights. My film addresses this issue. I believe that this award comes at a very special moment and I hope it is a signal for freedom and light to come to my country”.

The other most exultant face of the night was Idan Haguel, director, screenwriter and producer of ‘Concerned Citizen’, which, in addition to the Silver Palmera, won a prize of 20,000 euros. The film is a satire about the way of life of many white and bourgeois homosexuals embodied in a gay couple living in Tel Aviv. Haguel also had to collect the award from his leading actor, Shlomi Bertonov, who was at the time performing in a theater show in Tel Aviv.

The closing gala, held at La Rambleta, was presented by Daniel Tormo, Noèlia Pérez and Josep Zapater. The jury was made up of the composer Evanthia Reboutsika (Greece), the Palestinian cinematographer Ehab Assal, the Spanish screenwriter María Mínguez, the French critic and programmer Pierre-Simon Gutman and the Croatian actress, screenwriter and director Lana Baric. They decided to concentrate the awards on two titles. The ceremony was followed by the screening of ‘The Gigantes’, the new film by Valencian director Beatriz Sanchis, a road movie set on the border between the United States and Mexico.

The Audience Award of the Informative Section went to ‘No Dogs or Italians Allowed’, by Alain Ughetto. A stop motion film in which the director pays tribute to his family of emigrants and which competed in the last edition of the Annecy festival. The film recalls the journey from a town in Northern Italy to France in search of a better future at the beginning of the 20th century.

Valéncia Film Afers, the co-production forum of Mostra de València, celebrated its first edition this weekend with an intensive meeting of, on the one hand, invited Mediterranean producers and, on the other, the representatives of the ten projects selected by the organization. In addition, it has been complemented with master classes aimed at the international launch of a film, its tour of festivals and co-production formulas taught by experts such as Rosa Bosch. The Barreira Center for Higher Studies, the Valencian headquarters of the prestigious Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, the only one outside of Italy, hosted the meeting.

The first appointment for everyone was a pitch, that is, a brief presentation of the ten selected projects to all the guests by their producers and/or directors. It was possible to verify the diversity of approaches, themes and also the different stages of development of the chosen titles. For example, in the case of the production ‘A day in march’, only drawings of the main characters could be seen. The Valencian producer Giovanna Ribes introduced the Turkish director Çiğdem Sezgin, with whom she had already collaborated on ‘Suna’, a previous film. However, fragments of a first version of the montage could be seen from others. This is the case of ’50 meters’, in which the Egyptian Yomna Khattab delves into the parallel life of her recently retired father to immerse herself in the stories of her generation and reflect on her own future; the same as ‘A state of distraction’, a comedy in which the Lebanese Elie Khalife humorously fictionalizes how to make movies in a Lebanon on the verge of collapse facing all kinds of challenges. “This is the first time I’ve shared a snippet of the film in public and I’m satisfied to see that the comedy works from the beginning”. The Lebanese also congratulates himself because “there has been no rivalry between the producers with selected films, we have functioned as a great family”. Another comedy with a social tint that was presented from the same country was ‘The sad life of happy pig!’, by Christy Whaibe, starring a boy who works dressing up as pets at events and who decides to avenge the death of his father, murdered by a politician.

There were individual meetings between the film teams and the guest producers, with the presence of names such as Thanassis Karathanos, Roman Paul, Habib Attia, Nadia Turincev, Marina Perales Marhuenda, Rafa Molés, Jessica Khoury or Felipe Lage. The Spanish projects found a good reception, as confirmed by their producers. This is the case of ‘Alegre y olé’, signed by the director Clara Santaolaya under the umbrella of the Valladolid-based production company Batiak Films together with the Peruvian companies La Soga Producciones and Suena Perú. A drama whose filming is projected in our country to portray the life story of a girl with problems who begins an emotional journey with her grandfather suffering from Alzheimer’s. The Valencian producer Paloma Mora, who presented two projects, confirms that she already has an international co-production for both, but was looking for more accomplices. One of them is the film version of the story of “La Pastora”, ‘L’Aguait’, by Marc Ortiz Prades, which seeks to demystify the figure of Teresa/Durriti and Florencio, who was thus known as the intersex maqui that had to become a bandit. Filming will begin in October next year. The other is ‘Nena’, by Gabriel Ochoa, a love story between two women that is forged in maturity after a heterosexual life until then, set in a summer urbanization in 1987 and which will be shot this July in Castellón, Sot de Ferrer or Segorbe.

From Portugal, ‘Savanna and the mountain’, directed by Paulo Carneiro, was selected. The film team shows its satisfaction with the forum: “In Portugal, in forums like this one, after the pitch, you only have individual meetings with those interested in your project; but here we have been able to meet with all the invited producers. With some countries there is no kind of link with mine, so it is difficult to reach agreements; however, we have found a lot of complicity with people like Felipe Lage, given the ties that exist between Galicia and Portugal; also with producers from Lebanon…”. Of course, he confirms that “businesses are usually closed later, in the drinks”.

The Valencian producer Giovanna Rivas is satisfied both with the reception her project has received and with the level of the first edition of the forum: “The level of producers that has come is quite high, because they all have experience in international co-production and they bet on independent films from our league, with budgets between 700,000 euros and 1.2 million”, she assures. Most of them appreciate the organization and that the program has been strictly followed, despite the fact that it was too intense for everything to fit into the weekend.

The surprise has jumped in some cases because the producers of selected projects have been interested in other chosen ones. This is confirmed by the Egyptian producers, the representatives of ‘The pigeon tower’, with which Amal Ramsis enters three female characters in pigeon racing, a game dominated by men who will not accept their entry; and ‘El Max’, a social drama by the Egyptian Amrosh Badr: “We are all producers and some of my chosen colleagues with a project have asked me for the script.” Looking ahead, they suggest: “Now there is no prize, but that is not important. It would be interesting if in the future the forum had a fund from Creative Europe or Media to support the production of countries in the South of the Mediterranean”.
